Hiding From The Internet Links
In my book Hiding from the Internet, I discuss the various ways to remove your personal information from the internet. This includes social networks, people search websites, data brokers, public records, and more. The page of links was originally created to assist the readers of the book. Each link mentioned in the book is on this page, separated by chapter. I decided to share these links publicly to encourage others to protect their personal information. As techniques change, I will update the links page below.
Computer Maintenance Links
Utilities to Clean and Maintain your Computer
Below are the links to the FREE applications that I discuss during my presentations. Simply click on the name of the software, and the link should go directly to the file download area. Please let me know if you find an expired link. If you have any questions about the software, or would like to schedule a demonstration, contact me.
Computer Maintenance Checklist
This is the checklist that I use during my presentation of maintaining and repairing computers.
I currently recommend AVG for personal computers. It is free and has frequent virus definition updates that install automatically. When downloading, be sure to select the FREE version.
Microsoft Security Essentials
If you do not want to use AVG, this includes both Anti-Virus and real-time Spyware protection. An additional Anti-Virus should NOT be used if you choose this option.
This is my new favorite Malware/Spyware remover. I recommend updating the definitions and running weekly.
This is also a program that should be ran weekly. While this program is very similar to AdAware, it will find some spyware that AdAware will not. It should be used in conjunction with AdAware.
This is a great program that will seek all of the cookies, cache, and temporary files on your computer and delete them. This utility program is one of the very few safe applications to clean potentially unwanted files and it is completely free of cost.
Super Anti Spyware
This software offers a free version that will quickly find some of the most common malicious software out there.
ONLY USE FOR SEVERE INFECTIONS: RKill terminates a malware program's running process, and allows you to take action to remove the annoyances. It will also restore a hijacked browser and DNS settings.
ONLY USE FOR SEVERE INFECTIONS: Great tool that removes rootkits that take over your computer. I often run this program first on a machine that is extremely infected.
Mozilla Firefox Internet Browser
This is a better alternative to Microsoft's Internet Explorer. The look and feel is almost the same. This is a better option because most spyware is directed at the security holes in Microsoft's products. This software will greatly reduce the amount of problems that you may have with Internet Explorer. Highly recommended.
Free and easy to use software for recovering deleted files.
Sort of like CCleaner for Windows: A multifunction utility for Mac OS X which allows you to run misc tasks of system maintenance, to configure some hidden parameters of the Finder, Dock, QuickTime, Safari, iTunes, Login window, Spotlight and many Apple’s applications, to delete caches, to remove a certain number of files and folders that may become cumbersome and more.
Similar to the Windows version, this program will seek all of the cookies, cache, and temporary files on your computer and delete them.
The current free anti-virus solution that I recommend for Macs.
Assistance with recovering deleted or corrupted files and drives. Either take the DIY approach or use the data recovery service.
Online Search & Investigation Links
I maintain an entire website devoted to using the internet as an investigative tool. The most popular area of this website is my master list of online investigation links and custom search tools. The link below will give you access to all of the free resources.
