Law Enforcement Individual Training Sessions

Online Investigation Resources

This session identifies and demonstrates over 250 free online resources that can aid Investigators in solving both technical and non-technical crimes. Participants will be shown how to "dig" into the internet for personal information about any target. While popular sites such as MySpace and Facebook are covered in detail (including "backdoor hacks"), the presentation goes much deeper into the vast resources available online for researching personal information. Aside from web sites, other technologies such as digital camera data, Geo-location services, and live communication monitoring will be explained. These sources can also be used to conduct thorough background checks on potential employees. An article in Public Safety Magazine gives a small taste of how the information can be used: LINK

All procedures will be explained from start to finish including preparation of search warrants and emergency requests. Digital templates will be available to all participants.

One Hour

Participants will be shown how to request, retrieve, and analyze the content received during this process. All attendees will also get access to premium licensed API keys for unlimited searching.

30 Minutes

Intel Analysis Software

This session will demonstrate free software suites that will aid an Officer during any type of investigation. Maltego will assist with collecting intelligence about people, businesses, phone numbers, and email addresses. It will also show any connections that each may have to the others. FOCA will identify hidden information embedded within a website that can provide otherwise unknown information about a target. Other emerging programs will be displayed such as social network "scrapers", Twitter plotting maps, and a complete portable web browser with several investigation tools built in. Attendees will have full access to the entire collection of software demonstrated during the session.

Mapping options are presented that will create court-ready documents. All procedures will be explained from start to finish including preparation of search warrants and emergency requests. Digital templates will be available to all participants.

One Hour

Emergency Forensic Kit

This lecture assumes that most first response Police Officers will not be computer forensic experts. Instead of training on methods that are usually reserved for full time forensic investigators, this session identifies immediate options for a Patrolman or Detective. While a full forensic exam should be conducted when possible, this focuses on emergency situations when an expert is not available, such as an abduction. Examples of techniques include easily locating recently deleted files, identifying recent chat and web history, and determining a web presence of the victim for assistance from social network providers.

One Hour

How Hackers Commit Their Crimes

This popular session focuses on recent trends of online fraud, internet scams, and ways that suspects steal identity. The presentation includes the details of how hackers commit their crimes and what any person can do to protect themselves. The audience will learn immediately how data mining, password hackers, wireless networks, and cellular telephones are an emerging threat against them. Live examples of 'hacking' into information will shock the audience, while detailed solutions will be displayed on how to stop the threat. Free software solutions will be presented toward the end of the class.. This session is recommended for any Investigator or Detective.

Three Hours

Protecting an Officer's Personal Information

Police Officers and their families are constantly at risk of being targeted by criminal suspects. This session identifies publicly available vulnerabilities that expose sensitive information about Officers. Resources for eliminating this public and private data are explained as well as expected results. Attendees will learn how to eliminate their personal information, including address and contact information, from both public and private databases. Online resources for eliminating personal information will be provided to all recipients.
